CONGRATULATIONS ALANA

When I entered the nursing field, I started as an intensive care nurse.  The hospital gave me a wonderful education into the joys and heartache of nursing.  It wasn’t long before an opportunity came my way, a principal I had know briefly, asked me to come wok for her.  It took some time to decide to take the school nursing “plunge”.  I have never looked back in all my years from school nurse, to Nurse Coordinator, to Director of Health Services.  I have come to understand that I can contribute to children’s health in a continuum that impacts their entire lifetime. I strive to be an excellence in example and leadership, and never take my position for granted. Only by learning, and expanding our knowledge, can we all better our own school nurse practice and our students’ lives. I believe my contribution to the field of school nursing has been a dedication to community, to fortifying MOUs with our educational institutions to promote school nursing for our upcoming nurses.  To preceptor student nurses and encourage our present nurses to do the same.  In educating the community and school district alike, as to the benefits of school nursing and how we impact the health and wellness of students every day has been a great pride of mine. I don’t believe a leader can ask of someone, what they can’t or won’t do themselves. Therefore, I always try to lead by example, promoting the benefits of an all RN school nurse workforce, encouraging nurses to continue to be nationally certified, and providing meaningful training and staff development. I strive to make a positive impact by belonging to organizations that promote school nurses such as the NASN. I work closely with local entities and hospitals that assist our district in the education and training of school nurses. My hope is to continue to be blessed by the knowledge, skill, fortitude, and resilience of all the school nurses I come in contact with.
